Drinking enough fluids is necessary for overall health, but it becomes especially important while you are sick.  Staying hydrated aids in the normal functioning of the body's organs and muscles. Drink decaffeinated beverages (mostly water) throughout the day rather than just when you're thirsty to stay hydrated.

When you're sick with vomiting or diarrhea, it's even more crucial to drink water since your body loses vital fluids. However, it is not always easy to hydrate when you are not feeling well - nausea and weariness can make it difficult to swallow anything.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises the following tips to help you avoid dehydration in elders when sick:

  • Drink liquids if you aren't eating well. Avoid alcohol and caffeine-containing beverages such as soft drinks, tea, and coffee.

  • When unwell, older folks and people with kidney difficulties should see their doctor about the appropriate amount of liquid to consume.

  • Clear fluids such as water, broth, or sports drinks are recommended.

  • If you're too weak to drink from a cup, use a squeeze bottle or a straw.

  • It is important to avoid dehydration at all costs. Mild episodes of dehydration can be handled at home, but severe dehydration frequently necessitates hospitalization.

It is not always clear if you are dehydrated. Dark yellow urine is one telling indication. When you are well hydrated, your urine will be clear or extremely pale yellow. When you don't drink enough water, you may experience a headache or migraine.

If you observe any of the following dehydration symptoms, contact your primary care physician:

  • Unable to shed tears

  • Producing less urine than is normal

  • When pinched, dried-out skin takes a long time to return to its original position

  • Dry mouth or eyes

  • Rapid heartbeat

  • Blood in the feces or in the vomit

Eat fruits, watermelons, and melons to alleviate water and salt shortages. These fruits are extremely beneficial in regulating our bodies' water levels throughout the day for dehydration recovery. Apart from that, these fruits contain potassium and vitamins, which boost the body's salt and energy levels. You should also know how to keep healthy when you are sick.
