Increasing population coupled with the increasing life span of the seniors brings up challenges of managing the health-related issues for the seniors. One of the common issue the seniors face is knee problems which ends up in knee replacement. While the success rates of such surgeries are very high , the important issue faced by the families is the post-surgery rehabilitation of the seniors.

Physiotherapy plays a vital role during this phase for the seniors. Here is how -

Restores Mobility and Range of Motion:-

One of the key objectives is to restore mobility as well as range of the motions of the knees and the related muscles. This can be achieved with the help of some disciplined physical exercises under the expert guidance of a physiotherapist. In the initial stages these exercises can be quite painful and seniors may resist. However, role of the care taker is to counsel the seniors and support the physiotherapist. There may be some follow up exercises that the Physio may prescribe for the seniors where the caretakers can help in ensuring implementation.

Strengthens Supporting Muscles:-

Surgery leads to immobility as well as weakening of the muscles around the knee, such as the quadriceps and hamstrings. There are exercises in Physiotherapy that would strengthen these muscles, which are crucial for supporting the new joint, providing stability, and reducing strain on the knee.

Pain Management

Pain management is a crucial factor in the faster recovery after surgery. Some of the approaches that are employed in physiotherapy are

  1. Low impact aerobics training
  2. Stretching
  3. Applying cold and hot fomentation
  4. Massages – An expert massaging would relieve the pain in the affected area
  5. TENS & Ultrasound where (Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation) uses a device to send a low-voltage electric current to the skin over the area where you have pain. Ultrasound sends sound waves to the areas that hurt. Both may offer relief by blocking the pain messages that go to the brain.

Physiotherapy from an expert would have several benefits such as

  1. Prevents Post-Surgical Complications
  2. Improves Balance and Gait
  3. Enhances Long-Term Functionality
  4. Encourages Faster Recovery
  5. Boosts Confidence and Independence

In conclusion, physiotherapy is integral to healing, restoring mobility, reducing pain, and ensuring a smooth transition back to daily life after knee replacement surgery. It offers patients the support they need to regain independence and live pain-free.
