World Leprosy Day 2023: Theme and prevention tips

World Leprosy Day will be observed on January 29, 2023. This international day is a great chance to honor those who have suffered from leprosy, raise awareness about the disease, and advocate for an end to leprosy-related discrimination and stigma.

Leprosy also referred to as Hansen's disease is a chronic infection. Leprosy is caused by Mycobacterium leprae, a type of bacteria that attacks the human nervous system. It is most common in the hands, feet, & face. The World Health Organization (WHO) has a free treatment program, but many people do not take advantage of it. Individuals with Hansen's disease (leprosy disease) continue to face stigma, which can delay diagnosis and lead to further complications.

Theme of World Leprosy Day, 2023

"Act Now. End Leprosy," is the theme of World Leprosy Day 2023. This year's theme emphasizes three key messages:

●Elimination is possible: We have the ability and methods to stop the spread of this disease and defeat it.
●Act immediately: To eradicate leprosy, we need both resources and commitment. Prioritize the eradication of leprosy.
●Reach out to the unreached: Leprosy can be avoided and treated. It is unnecessary to suffer from leprosy symptoms.

In India, a leprosy awareness event is known as "Anti-Leprosy Day," which is observed on January 30, Monday, on the event of Martyr's Day (Shaheed Diwas), because Mahatma Gandhi was deeply dedicated to the cause of Leprosy (Hansen's disease).

Leprosy (Hansen's disease) prevention

To prevent Leprosy (Hansen's disease), the following factors can be used:

●Getting vaccinated with BCG may provide 50% safeguards against mycobacterium leprae.
●Early detection and treatment of those suffering from leprosy
●Maintain a clean and sanitary environment.
●Consuming lukewarm water
●Consumption of nutrients including vitamins (A, C, D, E, and B12) and minerals like zinc, magnesium, and selenium.

To eliminate the stigma attached to leprosy, education about the illness and improved access to necessary leprosy treatments are crucially important.
